The book has two roles
The Book symbol acts as a wild and also as a scatter. A wild can substitute within ordinary paying lines, while three scatter books trigger a separate free-spin feature. One symbol on a line does not by itself award spins.
The feature sequence
Three scatters award ten free spins. Before those spins, an ordinary symbol is chosen at random to become the special expanding symbol for that feature. The chosen symbol can expand across a reel when the specified winning conditions are met.
Retrigger and line rules
Another three scatters during the feature award ten more spins under the supplier description. Expanded symbols can pay across active lines under special adjacency rules. The in-game paytable controls the final combination.
Read the correct version
Book of Dead is one game in a wider series. A later Dead title may use different reels or modifiers; do not carry this explanation or a published RTP across versions without checking the game information.
Why an expansion needs its own evaluation
Worked mechanics example
Imagine that a regular high-value symbol is selected before the feature. During a free spin, examples of that symbol appear on separated reels. The ordinary line evaluation and the special expanded-symbol evaluation are different steps: the feature can use its special non-adjacent rule when the relevant quantity creates an additional win. It is not necessary for every chosen symbol to sit neatly on one ordinary payline before expansion.
The selected symbol is not a new wild. Other symbols still follow their usual rules, and the book retains its own role. Looking at which symbol was selected is therefore more useful than assuming that every reel will expand or every expanded screen will have the same value.
